Fall Travel 2026: The Ultimate Guide to Epic Autumn Colour

Here is the thing nobody tells you about autumn travel: it is the only season that rewards you twice. The crowds thin out, the prices drop, and the scenery gets better. Not a bad trade!

That first drive when the leaves turn. Worth setting an alarm for.

We have spent a lot of autumns chasing colour, from the covered bridges of New Hampshire to the vineyards above Florence, and this is the guide we wish we had had. It is a shortlist, not an encyclopaedia: the ten trips that actually deliver in fall 2026, when to go, what to book, and where to sleep.

Every destination below links through to our full, in-depth guide, so treat this page as the map and those as the territory. And a quick word on timing, because it matters more in autumn than any other season: peak colour moves roughly north to south and high to low, so being one week off can be the difference between a blaze and a bare branch. The autumnal equinox falls on 22 September 2026, and the good stuff follows within a fortnight.

🔘 BuKoo Tip: Book accommodation before you book flights for autumn trips. Foliage regions have tiny room inventories and they sell out six to eight weeks ahead, while flights in shoulder season stay cheap right up to departure. It is the opposite of how you would plan a summer trip.

New England: The One Everybody Means

If you only have one autumn in you, spend it here. New England packs sugar maples, white steeples and covered bridges into a drive you can do in a long weekend, and the colour is genuinely as loud as the photos suggest. Want the full six-state version? Our New England fall foliage guide has peak dates state by state, the three best drives and a day-by-day route.

Vermont — the purest colour

Vermont does not do subtle in October.

Vermont is the benchmark. Route 100 runs the spine of the state and is, for our money, the single best leaf-peeping drive in North America — the weekly state foliage report updates weekly and is worth obsessing over. Stowe and Woodstock are the postcard stops; get there before 9am and you will have them.

If you would rather not white-knuckle the navigation, the Route 100 self-guided audio driving tour narrates the whole byway as you drive it. Then read our full Vermont fall foliage guide for the specific pull-offs.

New Hampshire — the mountain drive

The Flume Covered Bridge. Yes, it really looks like this.

The Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountain National Forest is 34 miles with no petrol stations and no phone signal, which is exactly the point. Drive it east to west in the late afternoon and the light does the work for you. The Kancamagus audio driving tour costs about the same as lunch and is priced per car, not per person.

Down in Lincoln, the Seven Birches winery tour is a genuinely lovely 90 minutes, and on the coast the Portsmouth islands and harbour bike tour gets you out to New Castle Island and Fort Stark. More in our New Hampshire guide.

Coastal Maine — colour with a sea breeze

Maine turns later than the interior, which makes it the perfect second week. Acadia National Park peaks around mid-October and Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the US to see sunrise for part of the year. Along the coast, the state lighthouse trail strings together more than sixty of them.

The Portland lighthouse cruise takes in Portland Head Light and the seal colony at Halfway Rock in under two hours. Our 3-day Maine coast itinerary has the full route.

Cape Cod — the quiet one

Cape Cod in autumn is our favourite kind of secret: the summer crowds vanish, the Cape Cod National Seashore empties out, and the cranberry bogs turn a deep crimson through late October. Whales are still feeding on Stellwagen Bank into the autumn — the Provincetown whale watching cruise runs well past Labor Day.

Read our Cape Cod guide for the off-season picks.

Canada: Bigger Country, Fewer People

Quebec — sugar maples and a French accent

Fall colours reflected in a lake in Quebec during autumn 2026
Quebec turns a week or two before New England. Plan accordingly.

Quebec is New England with better pastry. The sugar maple is the province in tree form, and Bonjour Quebec runs an interactive foliage map covering 57 locations that is updated through the season. The Laurentians north of Montreal peak first, usually the last week of September.

The Sentier des Cimes treetop walkway near Mont-Tremblant puts you level with the canopy, which is a very different thing from looking up at it. Prefer to hike? The Mont-Tremblant National Park day trip from Montreal handles the driving. Full detail in our Quebec fall colours guide.

Ontario — harvest season in wine country

Autumn is harvest in Niagara, which means the wineries are working and the tastings are at their best. Niagara-on-the-Lake is twenty minutes from the falls and a world away in mood — the half-day Niagara winery tour is the easy way to do it without nominating a driver.

Pair it with Niagara Parks and the classic Maid of the Mist, then read our Toronto day trips guide and Canadian fall road trips for the wider loop. Driving yourself? Compare car hire rates in Canada.

Europe: The Shoulder Season Sweet Spot

October in Europe is the traveller cheat code. The summer queues are gone, the sea is still swimmable in the south, and half the continent is harvesting something delicious. Our best time to visit Europe guide breaks it down month by month.

Tuscany — truffles, grapes and empty galleries

Florence rooftops and the Duomo in autumn light
Florence in November. The queues are somebody else memory.

Florence in autumn is the version of Florence you were promised. The UNESCO-listed historic centre is walkable without a scrum, the Pitti Palace is quiet on a weekday morning, and Mercato Centrale is at its best when the new-season olive oil lands in November.

The San Lorenzo market food tour is the one we send friends on. See our autumn in Florence guide, and if you are building a longer trip, BuKoo has a complete Florence planner and a two-week Italy itinerary.

Croatia, Slovenia and beyond — October without the crowds

Lake Bled Slovenia in autumn colour, a top October Europe destination
Lake Bled in October. Same lake, a third of the people.

Our October in Europe guide runs through eleven of them, but the standouts are Slovenia, the Dalmatian coast, Piedmont in white-truffle season, and Transylvania in the mist. Plitvice Lakes in late October is one of the great European sights — the day tour from Split includes entry tickets, which matters because they cap daily numbers.

Romania rewards the same instinct: Bran Castle in October, fog and all, is the trip you actually wanted.

One note on the room rates: New England foliage pricing is the most aggressive seasonal surge in North American travel. The same inn that costs $140 in August will ask $340 on the second weekend of October. Booking in July is not enthusiasm, it is arithmetic. Compare US car hire rates while you are at it — autumn is the one season when the car matters more than the room.

Good to Bring

Autumn travel punishes the underprepared in a very specific way: it is warm at noon and cold at four, and it rains sideways. Layers, not bulk.

🌿 Packable waterproof rain jacket — folds into its own pocket, which is the only spec that matters when you are already carrying a camera.

🧥 Lightweight packable puffer vest — the single best warmth-to-space item for shoulder season.

🥾 Waterproof ankle hiking boots — wet leaves are far more slippery than they look on a trail.

📷 Circular polarising filter — this is the secret to foliage photos that look like the ones you admire. It kills the glare sitting on top of every leaf and the colour underneath just appears.

Insulated stainless steel bottle — there is no coffee on the Kancamagus. None. For 34 miles.

💡 Rechargeable LED headlamp — sunset arrives startlingly early by late October, usually while you are still on the trail.

🧼 Quick-dry microfibre towel — for the boat trips, the rain, and the one hotel that skimps.

Serious about the photos? Our fall foliage photography guide covers settings, timing and composition properly.

Fall Travel 2026: Your Questions Answered

When is peak fall foliage in 2026?

Broadly: Quebec and northern Vermont from the last week of September, central New England in the first ten days of October, coastal Maine and Cape Cod from mid-October, and Tuscany and southern Europe through November. Colour moves north to south and downhill over roughly six weeks, so if you miss it in one place you can usually chase it to the next.

Where should I go for fall colour if I only have a long weekend?

New Hampshire. The Kancamagus Highway, Franconia Notch and North Conway sit within an hour of each other, so you get the full New England experience without spending the weekend driving. Our New Hampshire guide has a three-day version.

Is autumn a cheap time to travel in Europe?

Yes, and noticeably so from mid-October. Flights and rooms drop once school holidays end, the Mediterranean stays swimmable into October, and the big sights stop rationing your time. The exceptions are the harvest festivals and truffle fairs in Piedmont and Tuscany, which get busy on weekends.

What is the best fall road trip in the USA?

For colour, Vermont Route 100 end to end. For variety, the East Coast run from the White Mountains down through the Berkshires. Our East Coast fall foliage road trip guide and East Coast autumn stops and experiences cover both routes.

What should I pack for an autumn trip?

Three layers you can add and shed: a merino or synthetic base, a packable insulated mid-layer, and a genuinely waterproof shell. Add waterproof footwear and a polarising filter if you are shooting the colour. See the Good to Bring list above.
