There is a reason half of America points its car north in the first week of October. New England in autumn is not a nice add-on to a trip — it is the trip, and for about three weeks it is the best show on the continent.
We have driven this a few times now, and the mistakes are always the same: people come a week too late, they book the hotel a month too late, and they spend the whole trip on the interstate instead of the back roads where the colour actually is.

Vermont: Start Here
Vermont is the opening act because it peaks earliest and because Route 100 is the single best foliage road in the country. It runs 200 miles up the spine of the state and you should drive it slowly, ideally with the Route 100 audio driving tour narrating as you go. Stowe and Woodstock
Stowe is the postcard and it knows it. Get to the von Trapp Family Lodge meadow early for the classic mountain-and-meadow shot, then drive Smugglers Notch before the tour buses. Woodstock, two hours south, is the prettier village — the Woodstock Inn anchors a green that has barely changed in a century.

New Hampshire: The Big Mountain Drive
The Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountain National Forest is the drive people mean when they say New England. Thirty-four miles, no services, no phone signal — fill the tank in Lincoln and just go. Drive it east to west late in the day and the low sun lights the canopy from behind. Beyond the Kanc
Franconia Notch and the Flume Gorge covered bridge are twenty minutes north. The Mount Washington Cog Railway hauls you up the Northeast’s highest peak on an 1869 rack railway, which is either a bucket-list ride or a very slow way to get cold, depending on your temperament — we say do it. Down in Lincoln, meet the cider makers at Rhythm Cidery, and on the coast the Portsmouth harbour bike tour is a gentler day.

Maine: Colour Meets Coast
Maine turns a week or two after the mountains, which makes it the perfect back half of the trip. Acadia National Park is the draw: drive the Park Loop Road, walk the carriage roads, and get up Cadillac Mountain for sunrise — from early October it is the first place in the United States to see it. Vehicle reservations are required for Cadillac in season, so book that before you arrive.

Massachusetts: Berkshires, Witches and the Cape

Salem in October

The room rates are the thing to plan around. A Vermont inn at $150 in September asks $340 on Columbus Day weekend, and the good ones are gone by August. Shift your trip one week either side of the peak weekend and you keep most of the colour at two-thirds of the price. Driving in? Compare US car hire rates — you cannot do this trip without a car.

New England Fall Foliage: Your Questions Answered
When is peak fall foliage in New England 2026?
Northern Vermont and the White Mountains peak roughly 25 September to 12 October; southern New England, the Berkshires and coastal Maine follow through to about 25 October; Newport and Connecticut are last, into early November. Columbus Day weekend (10–12 October 2026) is statistically the busiest and most expensive weekend of the year up there.
What is the best fall foliage drive in New England?
The Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire for concentration, Vermont’s Route 100 for length and variety, and the Mohawk Trail in Massachusetts if you are coming from the south. Do all three and you have the trip.
How many days do you need?
Seven is comfortable and covers four states. Four days gets you Vermont and New Hampshire properly. Three days is enough for the White Mountains alone, and honestly that is a better trip than rushing six states.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Yes, and earlier than you think. Foliage-season inventory in these towns is tiny — a few dozen rooms in some villages — and the best places are gone by midsummer for the peak fortnight. Book the room before the flight; flights stay cheap, rooms do not.
Can you see New England fall colour without a car?
Partly. Boston to Salem is an easy train, and guided day tours like the Boston fall foliage tour will get you into the White Mountains and back. But the back roads are the point, so hire the car if you possibly can.
Where should I go if the leaves have already dropped?
Drive south and drop in elevation. Coastal Maine, the Berkshires, Newport and Connecticut all hold colour one to three weeks after the northern mountains have bared off.
