🐧 BuKoo Tip: Autumn is the only season when Niagara wine country beats Niagara Falls, and they are twenty minutes apart. The Falls run all year; the harvest — and the icewine grapes going on the vine — happen the week you are there. If you are choosing between them in October, choose the vineyards and save the Falls for the end of your day, once the coach crowds have gone.
Niagara: Wine Country and the Falls
The Niagara region is 90 minutes from downtown and October is its best month. Take the Niagara winery tour with tastings through the Bench and Niagara-on-the-Lake and you are tasting icewine where it actually comes from — grapes left on the vine until they freeze, then pressed frozen.

North to the Lakes and the Maples
If you only do one, make it Algonquin Provincial Park — Highway 60 through the park is the densest sugar-maple display in Canada, and it peaks in the last week of September with unnerving precision. The Algonquin and Ragged Falls day trip gives you a very long but very good day.
Closer in, Muskoka is the cottage country everyone in Toronto disappears to — granite, birch and lake, an hour and a half up Highway 400. The Lake Muskoka and Huntsville group day trip gets you there without the traffic, which on an October Friday is your real enemy.

You will not believe the water at Bruce Peninsula National Park — Caribbean-blue over white dolomite at the Grotto, with the escarpment forest turning above it. Parks Ontario and Bruce Peninsula both use timed parking reservations in autumn, and they sell out for October weekends — that is the single most common way people ruin one of these days. And if you are driving, compare Canadian hire rates and pick the car up outside downtown, where it is considerably cheaper.
