There is no single American Christmas. There is a Bavarian one in Michigan, a Danish one in California, a beach one in Key West and a Puerto Rican one that runs to mid-January. Picking where to spend Christmas in the USA is really about choosing which version you want.
The other thing worth knowing early: the good hotels in the small Christmas towns — Leavenworth, Solvang, Frankenmuth — sell out by September, because the towns are tiny and the crowds are not.

The Storybook Towns
Leavenworth, Washington is a Bavarian village in the Cascades — timbered buildings, half a million lights, and mountains behind it that make the whole thing work. It is the most photographed Christmas town in America and the hardest to get a room in.
Solvang, California is the same idea done Danish, an hour from Santa Barbara in the Santa Ynez wine country, with a Julefest that runs all December. The advantage: it is 15°C and you can pair it with a vineyard afternoon.
Frankenmuth, Michigan is Bavaria again, and home to Bronner’s — a Christmas store the size of a football pitch that stays open all year. The Silent Night memorial chapel is a replica of the Austrian original and is genuinely affecting at night.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania calls itself Christmas City and has since 1937 — a Moravian settlement with a Christkindlmarkt in the shadow of the old Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces, which get lit for the season. It is the strangest and best-looking combination on this list.
The Cities
Asheville, North Carolina is the one to book if you want a grand-house Christmas. Biltmore — the largest private home in America — dresses roughly a hundred rooms and runs candlelight evening tours through December, and the town below it is all breweries and Blue Ridge views. A holiday-season city tour covers the town side well.
Boston does a properly historic American Christmas — the Common tree is an annual gift from Nova Scotia, Beacon Hill does candlelit carolling, and the Old Town Trolley is the sane way to cover a cold city with children in tow. Washington DC pairs the National Christmas Tree and the Botanic Garden train display with a Capitol and Library of Congress tour that is a good indoor afternoon.

The Warm Ones
San Juan, Puerto Rico has the longest Christmas season anywhere under the American flag — it starts after Thanksgiving and runs through Three Kings Day on 6 January and the San Sebastián street festival after that. Parrandas (roving carol parties that arrive at your house unannounced) are the tradition, and it is 27°C.
A guided walk of Old San Juan is the right first morning — five centuries of Spanish colonial city in sixteen walkable blocks — and the El Yunque rainforest and waterslide trip is the day out, in the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system.
Key West does a lit-boat parade and a Christmas that involves shorts, and Helen, Georgia is a third Bavarian village, this one in the Appalachian foothills where it is 12°C rather than freezing.
