Fewer than one percent of Thais are Christian, and yet Christmas in Thailand is everywhere in December — trees in every mall, lights down Sukhumvit, and beach bars putting tinsel on palm trees. It is Christmas as decoration and party rather than religion, and it is genuinely lovely.
It also happens to be the best weather of the Thai year. December sits in the cool dry season: sunshine, low humidity, calm seas on both coasts, and the islands at their clearest for snorkelling.

Bangkok: Malls, Lights and the Grand Palace
Bangkok does Christmas the way Bangkok does everything — at scale and in air conditioning. The malls along Ratchaprasong compete on tree size, Sukhumvit and Silom are strung with lights, and the hotels put on Christmas Eve buffets that are the best value in the city.
December is also the only comfortable month to walk around the old city. A guided tour of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun in the cool season is a completely different experience to doing it in April — and a guide gets you past the dress-code queue.
Chiang Mai: the Cool One
The north is properly cool in December — down to 14°C at night, which after Bangkok feels like winter. Chiang Mai’s old town is walled, walkable and full of temples, and the night bazaar runs a Christmas market of its own.
The thing to book here is a half-day at an ethical elephant sanctuary — no riding, no bathing shows, just feeding and walking with animals that were retired out of the trekking camps. Choose that over anything that puts a seat on an elephant.

Island hotels can run three times their May rate over Christmas and New Year, and the good ones sell out by September. If you are going for the holidays, book flights and the first hotel now, and leave the middle of the trip loose — that is where the flexibility is worth having, not at either end.
The Islands: Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Tao and Phuket
December is the moment the Gulf coast dries out and the Andaman is still calm — the one month both island groups are good at once.
Koh Pha Ngan is better known for the Full Moon Party, and the December one is enormous — but the island is mostly quiet jungle and empty northern beaches. The Ang Thong marine park day trip with kayaking and snorkelling is the best day out from here by a distance: 42 islands, a hidden lagoon, and lunch on the boat.
Koh Tao is the diving island and the cheapest place in the world to get certified. If you are not diving, the snorkelling day trip around Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan gets you the same water for a fraction of the price — Nang Yuan is three islets joined by a sandbar and it is the photograph everyone comes home with.
Phuket is the easy one: direct flights, real hotels, and the Andaman islands on the doorstep. The Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay day trip is the classic — go on a smaller boat and go early, because Maya Bay is capacity-limited and the afternoon slots are the crowded ones.

Not religiously — Thailand is about 94% Buddhist and Christmas Day is a normal working day. But it is celebrated commercially and enthusiastically: malls, hotels, restaurants and tourist areas decorate heavily from late November, and New Year is a genuine public holiday.
Is December a good time to visit Thailand?
It is the best time. The cool dry season means sunshine, low humidity and calm seas on both coasts. The trade-off is that it is peak season, with peak prices and full hotels.

Flights and Christmas-week island hotels by September. New Year on Koh Pha Ngan or Phuket books even earlier. Day trips can wait until you arrive except over the 24th to the 1st, when they fill.
