January and February are the two months you most want to leave, and the two months it costs the most to get wrong. Here is the good news: a properly warm winter break does not need your passport, a long-haul flight or a peak-season resort — four states and one territory stay warm all winter, and you can drive to some of them.
The split is simple, so which one are you? Heat and water means Florida or Puerto Rico; dry warmth and hiking means Southern California or Arizona; and Hawaii is the version worth the flight. Each one hands you a very different price and a very different January.

Puerto Rico: the Best Value Warm Winter
San Juan in January is 27°C, takes your dollars and needs no passport, and costs about half what Hawaii will. It is comfortably the best-value warm winter trip in the country, and almost nobody you know has considered it.
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system — waterfalls, natural waterslides and a rainforest hike, an hour from the city. And the catamaran day out to the Cordillera islands from Fajardo gets you to water that looks like the Caribbean because it is.
Florida: Miami, the Keys and St Augustine
Miami in winter is the driest, most pleasant version of itself — 22°C, low humidity, and the water still swimmable. An open-top bus and Biscayne Bay cruise combo is the efficient first day if you have never been.
Key West is four hours further south and four degrees warmer, and it is the one place in the continental US that will genuinely feel tropical to you in February. Book A sunset sail on the schooner America 2.0 for your first evening — the sunset here is a civic event.
St Augustine is your northern Florida option and the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the country — Spanish colonial old town, a 17th-century stone fort, and 20°C in January without South Florida prices. Take The trolley and history museum ticket or the tour pass covering 30-plus attractions, because the sights are spread further apart than you expect.
New Orleans: Warm, Cheap and at Its Best
Winter is quietly the right time for you to do New Orleans. Why? It is 17–20°C, the summer humidity has gone, hotel rates drop between New Year and Mardi Gras, and the city is doing its own thing rather than performing for a convention.
Three things worth your booking fee: a French Quarter food and history walk, the ghost, voodoo and vampire walking tour after dark, and an evening steamboat jazz cruise on the Mississippi — that last one is the one that surprises people.
One warning: rates jump hard for Mardi Gras and the two weeks before it. If you want cheap New Orleans, come in January.
The Dry West: Palm Springs, Sedona and the Central Coast
If you want warmth without humidity, the desert delivers. Palm Springs runs 20–24°C days in January with mid-century architecture, hot springs and a mountain tram that climbs from desert to pine forest in ten minutes. Sedona is cooler, at 18°C, and the red rock hiking in winter is far better than in a 40°C summer.
Both come with a caveat, and it is the one people forget: the nights are cold. Palm Springs drops to about 7°C after dark and Sedona to near freezing, so bring a proper jacket even though your days are shorts weather.
For something softer, take a three-winery tour with a picnic lunch in Paso Robles on California’s central coast — 18°C, green in winter, and a fraction of what you would pay in Napa.
🐧 BuKoo Tip: The desert is a two-wardrobe trip. Palm Springs and Sedona swing 15°C or more between afternoon and night — shorts at two, a warm jacket at six. Everyone under-packs for this and ends up buying an overpriced fleece at the trailhead gift shop. Bring layers even though your forecast says 22°C.
Hawaii: Whale Season
Winter is not the off-season in Hawaii — it is humpback season. Thousands of whales come down from Alaska to calve in the shallow channels between Maui, Lanai and Molokai from December to April, and you can see them from the beach.
A Maui whale-watching cruise with a marine naturalist is worth the extra over the cheap boats — the commentary is the difference between seeing a splash and understanding what you are watching. Waikiki runs its own season if you are based on Oahu.
The other Maui thing is the Haleakala sunrise — you are above the clouds at 3,055 m, and it is genuinely cold up there, around 3°C before dawn. Reservations are required and open 60 days ahead, so put a reminder in your phone.
On Kauai, winter is the wet season on the north shore, and that is exactly why the waterfalls run. A Waimea Canyon and Jurassic Falls helicopter tour is the splurge people come home calling the best hour of the trip; a fixed-wing sightseeing flight gives you most of it for much less.

Puerto Rico, at about 27°C in January, then Hawaii and Key West at 24–26°C. If you are staying on the mainland, South Florida and the southern tip of Texas are your only reliably-above-20°C options.
