How to Drive Maine’s Beautiful Coast: A Spectacular Guide

Maine gives you something no other New England state can: colour and coastline in the same frame. Granite headlands, lobster boats, a working harbour — and behind all of it, spruce and maple turning. It also holds its colour a fortnight after Vermont has gone bare, which makes it the sensible late choice.

Three days from Kennebunkport up to Bar Harbor covers the good part properly. Here is the route, the stops, the week each one peaks and where the lobster is actually worth it.

Doing the whole region? The New England fall foliage guide has the seven-day route, and the East Coast foliage road trip runs the byways south.

🐧 BuKoo Tip: From 7 October to 6 March, Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the United States to see the sunrise — which means the October sunrise there is a genuinely special thing rather than a marketing line. You need a vehicle reservation to drive up, released in blocks and gone within minutes. Set an alarm for the release, not just the sunrise.

Kennebunkport and Portland

The Old Port. Come hungry.

Start at Kennebunkport, an hour and a half north of Boston — clapboard, a harbour at Cape Porpoise, and colour that arrives late enough to be your fallback if the mountains have dropped. Then Portland, which is not a stop on the way to Acadia so much as a reason to come.

Portland is, per head, one of the best food cities in America. The Old Port culinary walking tour is the efficient way in — six or seven tastings and someone who can tell you which lobster shack is coasting on reputation. On the water, the Best of Maine lighthouse cruise takes in several lights including Portland Head Light, commissioned by George Washington and the most photographed lighthouse in the country.

Acadia National Park

Jordan Pond at dawn. Get there before the light does.

Acadia is the reason to drive this far, and October is its best month — the summer crowds have gone, the colour is on, and the light off the water in the late afternoon is extraordinary. Park Loop Road does the highlights in half a day; Jordan Pond at first light does something else entirely.

The Cadillac Mountain sunrise tour with pickup solves the vehicle-reservation problem for you, which in October is worth the price on its own. And the carriage roads e-bike tour gets you onto the 45 miles of crushed-stone carriage roads John D. Rockefeller Jr built here — no cars, stone bridges, and the best colour in the park.

If you would rather be driven, the guided Acadia bus tour covers Park Loop Road without the parking fight.

Bar Harbor and the Lobster Question

Bar Harbor. Half the town shuts in late October — check before you go.

Bar Harbor is the base for Acadia and it does empty out fast: a lot of it closes for the season around the third week of October, so check opening hours rather than assuming. The Bar Harbor Inn stays open and has the harbour view.

On the lobster: a roll should be lobster and very little else, served cold with mayonnaise or warm with butter, and it should cost more than you want it to. The guided lobster roll crawl settles the argument by taking you to several and letting you decide, which is more useful than any list.

How to Route It

🦞 Three days: Boston or Portland in, one night Portland, two nights Bar Harbor. This is the trip. Do not try to add Camden as well.

🍂 Five days: add Camden and the Mid-Coast on the way up — Mount Battie, the schooner fleet — and give Acadia two full days rather than one.

🌊 A weekend: fly into Portland, do the Old Port, Portland Head Light and Kennebunkport, and skip Acadia entirely rather than rushing it. It is four hours each way from Portland.

🚗 Compare US hire rates — Portland and Bangor are both cheaper than Boston, and Bangor puts you an hour from Acadia rather than four.

Acadia is $35 per vehicle for seven days — pay once, not daily. If your trip also touches other national parks in the same year, the $80 America the Beautiful annual pass pays for itself at three parks.

Quick Picks: For the one morning worth the alarm, sunrise on Cadillac Mountain — book the vehicle reservation the minute it releases, or take a tour that has one. For the best few hours in the park, the carriage roads by bike. And eat in Portland, not Bar Harbor — it is a genuinely better food town and half the price.

Good to Bring

Coastal Maine in October is wind rather than cold — 12°C on a headland with an onshore breeze feels like 4°C. And Cadillac at sunrise is properly freezing.

🧥 Waterproof shell jacket — wind off the Atlantic on Cadillac and the Park Loop headlands, plus the sea spray on the lighthouse cruise.

🧢 Merino beanie and socks set — a pre-dawn summit in October is close to freezing, and you will be standing still.

🔥 Rechargeable hand warmers — specifically for the sunrise. You will be up there 45 minutes before anything happens.

🥾 Waterproof hiking boots — the Jordan Pond path and the Great Head trail are wet granite and root all season.

🔭 Nikon PROSTAFF binoculars — seals, porpoises and peregrines off the headlands, and the whale boats out of Bar Harbor.

💧 Leakproof insulated mug — nothing is open at 5am in Bar Harbor. Fill it the night before.

The Maine Coast in Autumn: Your Questions Answered

When is peak foliage on the Maine coast?

Acadia and the Mid-Coast peak from about 8 to 22 October; Portland and the southern coast follow through to about 25 October. That is a fortnight later than northern Vermont, which makes coastal Maine the best late-season option in New England.

How many days do you need on the Maine coast?

Three is the minimum that works: one night in Portland, two in Bar Harbor. Five lets you add Camden and give Acadia two full days. Anything less than three and you are spending the trip driving — it is four hours from Portland to Acadia.

Do I need a reservation for Cadillac Mountain?

Yes, to drive up for sunrise between late May and late October. Reservations release in two batches — one well in advance, one 48 hours ahead — and the sunrise slots go within minutes. A guided sunrise tour includes access, which is often the easier route in October.

Is Acadia crowded in October?

Far less than summer, but the first two weekends of October are busy and Park Loop Road parking fills by mid-morning. Go early, or use the free Island Explorer shuttle, which runs into mid-October. Midweek in the third week of October is close to having it to yourself.

Where is the best lobster in Maine?

Honestly, the pound at the working harbour rather than the restaurant on the main street — Cape Porpoise near Kennebunkport, and the shacks around Bar Harbor. A roll should be mostly lobster, cold with mayo or warm with butter, and priced by the day’s catch.

Does everything close in Maine after October?

A lot of Bar Harbor does, from roughly the third week of October — restaurants, the whale boats, some hotels. Portland stays open year-round. If you are travelling late in the month, check opening hours before you book rather than after.
