Discover The Majestic Mount Rushmore

No trip to South Dakota is complete without visiting the iconic Mount Rushmore. Nestled in the Black Hills, this colossal sculpture features the faces of four U.S. presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—carved into the granite cliffs. If you walk down the stairs at the end of the viewing platform there is a building and a guide that gives a fantastic presentation telling the many stories behind this iconic landmark.

Standing in front of these monumental faces is awe-inspiring. The history and artistry behind this landmark are fascinating, and the surrounding area offers more than just the famous sculpture. You can hike the Presidential Trail, a short loop that brings you closer to the monument, or explore the nearby Black Hills National Forest, which offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures like hiking, fishing, and camping.

Getting to Mount Rushmore is easy. If you’re flying in, Rapid City Regional Airport is your best bet. From Rapid City, it’s just a 30-minute drive to the monument. If you’re driving from elsewhere, the monument is accessible via US Highway 16A.

Unwinding at Custer State Park

Just a short drive from Mount Rushmore, you’ll find Custer State Park, one of South Dakota’s most beautiful natural treasures. This park is massive! We highly recommend booking a stay at one of the lodges within the park. You’ll have the option of staying in the lodge itself or a cabin. We opted for the cabins at Sylvan Lodge and they were amazing! They also have a fabulous restaurant at the lodge you’ll want to check out.

This expansive park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the famous bison herds that roam freely across the landscape. Driving along the Wildlife Loop Road is a must-do, where you’ll likely encounter bison, pronghorn, elk, and maybe even a curious burro or two. You will certainly see prairie dogs!

If you’re hoping to see elk, we learned the best time to see elk is at early dawn or later at dusk. There is a visitor center right when you get to Wildlife Loop. The person on staff was very knowledgable about which roads to take for the specific animals you are hoping to see. It’s worth the quick stop in.
