Our Travel Photography Gear

Travel Photography is a balancing act. The balance of having the gear to suit your photography needs or style and still being able to travel light. A balancing act we often struggle with.

After nearly six years of full time travel, our luggage, which is our entire life’s possessions seems to be in a continuous state of flux. We will easily sacrifice personal belongings in favour of camera gear but often have to resist the urge to buy that bigger lens or latest video gear in order to keep it manageable.

So, in six years of carting photography gear around the world, this is the primary kit we have come up with. This may be more than most would like to carry and, less than others could possibly get by with. Everyone will have different needs and opinions but for now, we have found a good balance.

Remember, no matter what gear you use, good photo’s only come with practice and understanding your equipment. People often think they will take better photographs with a more expensive camera. Whether you opt for a smartphone or a full-frame DSLR, the better you understand the functionality of your equipment and the more you practice, the better images you will get.

Improve Your Photography Skills

Whether you are just learning digital photography or are already quite experienced, this is one of the best books we have come across. It covers all the basic elements of photography from beginner to advanced in a simple to understand language. It also covers a large range of photography styles such as portrait, landscape, HDR and more advanced techniques.

All the sections are embedded with video of the content so it’s easy to use and is full of easy to apply quick tips for improving your photography.

This is our go-to reference and first recommendation to people wanting to up their photography skills.

Primary Travel Photography Gear.

We use a Nikon D850 and  Nikon D750 as our primary photography bodies.  This gives us the luxury of being able to have two lenses at the ready. We also opted for a second Nikon DSLR body, the D500 which gives us the full 4k video functionality.

Companion Travel Photography and Video Gear

The Nikon D500 makes the perfect companion camera to the D750 for action photography and 4K video.

Drone

Had the Mavic Pro not been released, we would not have bought a drone due to the sheer size and lack of portability of the drones previously on the market. The Mavic is small enough to fit in your day to day camera bag and only weighs around 1 kg so we felt we could justify this little indulgence.
