Some trips you take. This one takes you. A Southern African safari is the big one — the Big Five at dawn, elephants by the hundred, mokoro rides through glassy channels, and the thundering finale of Victoria Falls. And the best part? You can string the greatest hits into one unforgettable ten-day route.

This is the circuit I send first-timers on: start gentle and malaria-free, finish on a natural wonder. Fly into Johannesburg, hop by light aircraft between camps, and roll out at Victoria Falls. Each stop below links to our full BuKoo guide, so treat this as your master plan and dive into the detail wherever you like. Let’s go find some lions!

Days 1–3 · Madikwe: Your Big Five Warm-Up 🦁

Ease into safari life in Madikwe Game Reserve — a malaria-free private reserve on the Botswana border, and my top pick for a first safari. It’s all Big Five and big skies without the crowds: just you, your ranger and the bush at dawn. Give it two or three nights and your odds of the full set go way up.

Days 4–6 · Okavango Delta: Into the Water Wilderness 🛶

Fly north to one of the planet’s great wildernesses. The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage site where a river fans out into the Kalahari instead of reaching the sea — so you explore it by mokoro (dugout canoe), gliding past lily pads while elephants wade nearby. It’s safari at its most peaceful and surreal.

Days 7–8 · Chobe: Land of a Thousand Elephants 🐘

Next stop, the greatest elephant show on earth. Chobe National Park has one of Africa’s densest elephant populations, and the magic here is the river — an afternoon boat safari drifts you right up to herds drinking, hippos yawning and crocs basking. Base yourself in Kasane, just a short hop from the Falls.

Days 9–10 · Victoria Falls: The Smoke That Thunders 🌈

Finish with a bang — a mile and a half of it. Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the locals’ name for it — Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders” — says it all. Walk the rainforest paths (you will get soaked), then toast the trip with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi as hippos grunt in the shallows.

🐧 BuKoo Tip: Safari camps are small and book out a year ahead for the dry season (May–October) — so lock in your dates early. And pack neutral colours (khaki, olive, tan): bright white spooks the animals and black attracts tsetse flies. Leave the red shirt at home!
Getting Around: Flying the Safari Circuit 🛩️
You won’t be driving this one — and that’s the joy of it. Camps arrange light-aircraft transfers between Madikwe, the Okavango and Chobe (bags are weight-limited, so pack soft duffels), and it’s a short, scenic road transfer from Kasane to Victoria Falls. The only place you might add a self-drive is South Africa’s Panorama Route if you tack on extra days.
Good to Bring 🎒
- 🔭 A good pair of binoculars — the sightings are close, but the details are the memory.
- 🧥 Neutral-colour layers — khaki and olive for game drives; dawns are cold, middays are hot.
- 🧢 A wide-brim sun hat — open vehicles mean zero shade for hours.
- 🔋 A power bank — remote camps have limited charging, and your camera will be working overtime.
- 🦟 Insect repellent (DEET) — essential for dusk drives and riverside camps.
- 🔦 A headlamp — camp paths are unlit, and you’ll be up before dawn.
Southern Africa Safari FAQ
Is this route good for a first safari?
It’s built for it. Starting in malaria-free Madikwe eases you in, and each stop offers a different flavour of the wild — Big Five bush, the watery Okavango, Chobe’s elephants and the grand finale of the Falls. You finish having seen the very best of Southern Africa without a punishing pace.
Do I need malaria tablets?
Madikwe is malaria-free, but the Okavango, Chobe and Victoria Falls are in malaria areas — so yes, you’ll want antimalarials for the Botswana and Zimbabwe legs. Chat to a travel clinic a few weeks before you go, and pack repellent and long sleeves for dusk.
How much should I budget?
Safaris are mostly all-inclusive (rooms, meals, game drives and often drinks), which softens the sticker shock. Mid-range camps run roughly $350–600 per person per day; add flights between camps on top. It’s a splurge — but it’s the trip people remember for the rest of their lives.
